Beware of per-pixel characterization of land cover

چکیده
A simulation experiment was carried out to analyse the e ects of the modulation transfer function on our ability to estimate the proportions of land cover within a pixel by linear mixture modelling. In the simulated landscape the proportionof each land cover type in every pixel was known exactly. The standard error of the estimate (SEE) between percentages derived from mixture modelling and the actual land cover percentages was 11%. Substantial improvements in estimating the percentages can be obtained simply by deriving estimates for pixels of twice the original dimensions, the SEE dropping to 4.16%, though this is with the obvious consequence of a nal product with a coarser spatial resolution. Alternatively by deconvolving the input bands using a linear approximation of the point spread function the SEE can be reduced by almost as much, namely to 5.11%. If we combine the two approaches, by rst doconvolving the bands, estimating the percentages and then aggregating resultant pixels to twice their original linear dimensions, the SEE drops to 2.24%.

Introduction: Having accurate and up-to-date information on the status of land use and land cover change is a key point to protecting natural resources, sustainable agriculture management and urban development. Preparing the land cover and land use maps with traditional methods is usually time and cost consuming. Nowadays satellite imagery provides the possibility to prepare these maps in less ...
متن کاملLand Cover Heterogeneity Effects on Sub-Pixel and Per-Pixel Classifications
Per-pixel and sub-pixel are two common classification methods in land cover studies. The characteristics of a landscape, particularly the land cover itself, can affect the accuracies of both methods. The objectives of this study were to: (1) compare the performance of sub-pixel vs. per-pixel classification methods for a broad heterogeneous region; and (2) analyze the impact of land cover hetero...

Introduction Land use reflects the interactive characteristics of humans and the environment and describes how human exploitation works for one or more targets on the ground. Land use is usually defined on the basis of human use of the land, with an emphasis on the functional role of land in economic activities. Land use, which is associated with human activity, is undergoing change over time....
